A Comparative Study of Fingerprint Thinning algorithms

چکیده
Thinning plays a very important role in the preprocessing phase of automatic fingerprint recognition/identification systems. The performance of minutiae extraction relies heavily on the quality of skeletons used. A good fingerprint thinning algorithm can depress image noise and promote the robustness of the minutiae extraction algorithm which helps improve the overall performance of the system. Many thinning algorithms have been devised and applied to a wide range of applications including, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), biological cell structures and fingerprint patterns. With so many thinning algorithms available, deciding which one is appropriate for a particular application has become very difficult. In an effort to assist fingerprint biometrics developers choose an appropriate thinning algorithm, a study was taken to compare performance of four different thinning algorithms. These four algorithms are implemented and their performance evaluated and compared. The algorithms are compared in terms of the quality of the skeletons they produce (i.e. connectivity and spurious branches) as well as the time complexity associated with each algorithm. Results show that faster algorithms have difficulty preserving connectivity. Zhang and Suen’s algorithm gives the least processing time, while Guo and Hall’s algorithm produces the best skeleton quality.

A Comparative Study of Iterative Thinning Algorithms for BMP Images
Thinning is a very important preprocessing step for the analysis and recognition of different types of images. Thinning is the process of minimizing the width of a line, in an image, from many pixels wide to just one pixel (Lam et al., 1992) [3]. Thus Correct and Reliable thinning of character patterns are essential to a variety of applications in the field of document analysis and recognition ...
متن کاملA Modified fingerprint image thinning algorithm
Most fingerprint recognition applications rely heavily on efficient and fast image enhancement algorithms. Image thinning is a very important stage of image enhancement. A good thinning algorithm preserves the structure of the original fingerprint image, reduces the amount of data needed to process and helps improve the feature extraction accuracy and efficiency. In this paper we describe and c...

In the recent years, the optimization techniques using evolutionary algorithms have been widely used to solve electromagnetic problems. These algorithms use thinning the antenna arrays with the aim of reducing the complexity and thus achieving the optimal solution and decreasing the side lobe level. To obtain the optimal solution, thinning is performed by removing some elements in an array thro...
متن کاملFingerprint minutiae extraction based on principal curves
It is important to extract minutiae of a fingerprint for the implementation of an auto fingerprint identification system. In this paper, the principal graph algorithm proposed by Kegl is used to obtain principal curves, which can be served as the skeletons of a fingerprint. Based on the obtained principal curves, a minutiae extraction algorithm is proposed to extract minutiae of the fingerprint...

Fingerprints are a great basis for identification of persons. Fingerprint recognition is one of oldest procedures of biometric identification. However outcome a good fingerprint image is not always easy. So a fingerprint image must be pre-processed before matching. The objective of this paper is to present animproved and enhanced fingerprint image. We have considered the factors relating to obt...
